A Brief History
Today, scores of Project Read Bahamas volunteers share their time and expertise teaching others in a confidential environment how to read, using the Laubach Way to Reading, of “Each One, Teach One”.
In 1991 the Rotary Club of East Nassau responded to the challenge of Rotary International by establishing an adult functional literacy programme in The Bahamas. This programme has now expanded to include teenagers at risk of becoming high school dropouts.
With the help of Janet Hansen and Deborah Barbino of Laubach Literacy Action in Ft. Lauderdale, the first Nassau tutor training took place in February 1992.
Project Read is now a fully independent charity incorporated under the laws of The Bahamas as a non-profit organization.
There is nothing more inspirational than the extraordinary growth a person experiences by learning to read. New readers learn to do more than read and write English. They also gain the skills and confidence they need to make informed decisions in their lives.
